The screenplay, told from Tennessee Williams' POV, expands the two-character
play into a multi-layered film story with Frank Merlo (Williams' lover/secretary of 16 years), Audrey Wood (super
agent and surrogate mother), as well as icons of the era, such as, Roberto Rossellini (Magnani's lover from
1945-1950), Luchino Visconti (with whom both Williams and Magnani worked), Marlon Brando (Magnani's co-star), Burt Lancaster
(Magnani's co-star), and Sophia Loren (Magnani's rival) coming to life as characters.
